CURRENCY
Guyana dollar (GYD$) is the local currency; however, the US dollar is also accepted in some places. There is widespread concern about counterfeiting, particularly of foreign notes. Therefore, foreign currency should only be exchanged at banks, hotels and licensed currency exchange houses (cambios). It is advisable to use newer denomination notes. Only a few major hotels accept credit or debit cards. Guyana is largely a cash-based society; credit and debit cards are accepted methods of payment for some goods and services in larger shops.
